Why Valentine's Day

This is a totally unrelated post about one of the most renown days of the year, celebrated around the world and expressed in very diverse styles. Typically, you would expect all the romantic couples to exchange gifts or at least spend some time together. On the day or over the weekend, you can guarantee at some point, they will either cuddle up in bed watching trash TV, to rekindle their frequent intimate hours of solace. Some folk like to boast their status by prudently conforming to give it 'The Big One' with a fancy meal in an over-priced restaurant around a bunch of strangers all imitating the exact, expected method of public displays of affection. With parks walks and cinema dates too.

But why? It is one of those days that makes the loners feel incredibly more single than they should already have to. If you are living alone, with no significant other, then it sure does highlight your Singledom. Do not fear, for Valentine's Day is simply another day of the year, another date on the calendar, another moment in life, and it will come around again. For all you know, you might fall in love by next year, with a new friend, a new job or a past time. I love having the freedom to interpret all things life has to offer with a positive aspect. It does not essentially mean romantic love. You do not need to have romance in life to be happy. There is so much beauty and love in the world to be admired apart from a significant other.

I went for a walk earlier, and I see a variety of love in translation. There is the cute young couples floating down the footpath, hand in hand with a swing in their step. Immediately behind them was a person gently pushing a lady in a wheelchair around the park. Then I return to my dwelling to spy a young son and his father spending the afternoon together. This is the aim of my epiphany.

Legend has it that St Valentine of Rome was imprisoned for administering weddings to soldiers who were not allowed to marry. He was a healer, he was a martyr and an all round hero. Again, every thing is subject to intellect. Whether you just enjoy the novelty of the occasion, or perhaps year after year, you find yourself wondering what all the fuss is about; what is Love? I have made it my soul mission in life to master the subject privately. (no puns intended)

There is no harm in sending a message to a loved one, the consumerism is not important or required. Today, let us simply reflect on all the special times we have encountered, cherished and blithely relinquished love, and to know deep down, there is always more to come. You are not "Forever Alone." *facepalm*

I say Happy Valentine's Day with a broad context, and I hope that every day of the year brings you Love & Happiness.
