Alternative Fashion

I think what we need to see on more blogs, Pinterest boards, and in mainstream media, that shall deliver triumph, power and attitude; a long debated statement in the fashion world - be it more a lifestyle as opposed to a 'phase' or 'trend'... that's 'alternative' to you and me!

Recently, with the changing seasons, some reflection and a revamp in my wardrobe, I have re-discovered my love for alternative fashion. It's true, we associate goth, punk, rocker, emo, scene etc. with the varied taste in music, selective choice of bands, brands and style icons. In conjunction with this particular look, it is permissive for the collection who may feel they do not fall into a category outside of this spectrum, in regards to pop-culture, that I believe deserves further appreciation.

Not only do these figures in the alt-world provide themselves as an inspiration to others, and encourages people to compose themselves exactly how they wish, then this grants the public the liberty to do so, and this is a positive construct!

Of course, without their fountains of talent, authenticity and enigma, they wouldn't be the successful, well admired entertainers for the industry that they perform in today. Lovers of the alternative are the driving force behind their audacity and fame; they promote what alternative is all about, and we need that. Not only does it raise awareness, but it makes people more accepting of it as a genuine mode.

By specification, 'Alternative' is rightly described as unorthodox, nonconformist and an irregular preference in media, art, clothing and ideas. It is often frowned upon, assumed that it is for people who have 'lost direction' or fallen victim to a 'cult'. Rather it should be considered as one of the foundations for community spirit, for all who participate in this nature across the world. It is a symbol of self-expression and behaves as a medium for like-minded people to communicate their mutual passions.

There is something strangely alluring about alternative culture. Whether you are a supporter or not, it is that rebellious, polarised, independent demure that greets frequently misunderstood characters, the opportunity to be a part of a tradition wider than their own bubble of fantasia.

The recent rise in popularity in favour of the alternative style, especially body modifications has grown from the likes of Adam Levine and David Beckham.

Nowadays, we are witnessing an escalation of women who are braving it to the studio as well. What was once previously ascribed to men alone, many women endure the rite of passage for a sentimental piece of their life, permanently inked on their bodies, as a mark of integrity and to physically reveal parts of their personality.

Potentially, there are hundreds of different attributes that could fall into the alternative classification however, I feel that labelling in itself is a hypocrisy to what it means to break the societal norms of fashion.

It is not simply aesthetics alone that suggest an alternative style. You may pass by your 'average' stranger in the street, and little would you realise they might be into the same shit as you! Unless otherwise stated, alternative music, fashions and topics may be on the mainstream agenda, and these emerge from time to time and become 'popular'.

You do not simply wander into a high street store and grab several 'alternative' items, it requires a lot of digging around to find the unique items that you like, to build a wardrobe for the novice scenester. From my research, these fashions are generally in the higher price range, therefore it takes longer to create complete outfits, if you want the branded versions. If you're like me, then platforms such as eBay, Amazon and a trip to Primark will suffice!
